Final...Concept & Narrative for my gallery owner

Information about the Owner:
  • was a high school art teacher who have taught many year 12 art class and help her students to complete their body of works.
  • around late 30's, mature and energetic to fulfill her lifelong dream: support and help more students that have art potential to live by doing their art.
  • wants to help students who lose their chances to get into artexpress and help them to earn for living by doing what they love: their art.
  • want to have a life that is full of art
Concepts for the Gallery:
  • a free and open space to work for students who just stressed over for a full year by their HSC
  • the lady is able to see the whole gallery in her office and apartment so she can feel the gallery all the time
  • every part of the gallery can be beautiful = art can be anywhere in this gallery
  • no/blurry boundary between outside and inside the "gallery"
  • every move within the gallery is art. They can be seen as performances within the gallery and also the street

Final Model Photos...

Main features of this Gallery...

The Grand stair which allow more variety of space for different artworks. The space in front of the stair is large and tall enough for bigger and more out of bound works.

The railing /bar-like stand on the apartment level works like a stage or speech stand for the lady when there is a need for her to announce (speak loud) something.

The huge glazing of the side of the gallery, the outdoor courtyard and the office just right next to it.
The courtyard would be made of white colour material which makes it a canvas for the students to work. They are free to draw on the floor or wall of any part of the gallery and courtyard.

The whole transparent front elevation which allows the pedestrian to see the whole gallery so they have an idea what the gallery is doing but not entirely. They will then enter the gallery with their raised curiosity and understand the works and students.

The Whole Model

Final drawings...I - plans

Site plan(site 3) 1:500

Ground Floor Plan, main gallery space with office(negotiation with clients/customers takes place), 1:100
Second Floor Plan, main Studio space with office(where consulting with students occur), 1:100
Second Floor Plan, Apartment space with balcony, 1:100
with open kitchen, bedroom and living room.

The railing of the space is also a bar stand which the owner can have her breakfast and look over the whole gallery when she is relaxing.
It can also be a stand for her to announce when there are events going on in the gallery.

Perspective Drawing

Poche for one of the gallery room(section and plan, 1:50)

This room is recreating the atmosphere of the space where Artexpress takes place in the Gallery of NSW.

There are sittings (beam bags) around the centre room so viewers have more position to view the artworks, not just standing in front of them.
It can also be a small theatre for video art or installation.

Section of the gallery,1:100

This drawing clearly shows how the apartment relate to the whole gallery and how the stage railing works.
This also shows the large space in front of the stairs and how visitors relate to the artworks that are placed there.( the sofa and coffee table under the artwork)

The Model...

The courtyard, office and the little courtyard behind the the office.

This section cut photo also shows material of the void at the front of the gallery which I use to link the gallery with the street.
People still feel they are a part of Newtown in side this part of the gallery but the shadow casting by the second floor and the artworks around this space hint the visitors that there is a distinction between the two different space.

Close up of the courtyard and its relationship with the gallery. There is no clear distinction between them but a transparent glazing. I want to show that the courtyard is also a space for art. They do not need to be lock inside a closed space but anywhere.

The little courtyard for the owner outside her office. Also shows the relationship of the vegetation within the little garden with the second floor.

The balcony outside the apartment

The back of the gallery, a large garage door for delivering material and artworks. Beside this door is the fire escape door which the fire stair leads to.

The glass overhang at the front continue the street wall of Newtown but when people walk under it and look up, they can see what is going on on the second floor and third floor. The overhang would not restrict their range of sight.

Scribbles... ideas, developing, improving...

The shapes of the gallery can be which The courtyard, gallery and apartment space interact with each other.

First 3D idea of how I want the gallery look like.

Ideas for the office ...

How I want the front facade looks like with the glass also my insist of using a roof that is not visible from the front and the site( nearly flat roof). I don't want people's eyes get distracted when they are looking into the transparent facade and see what is going on in the gallery.

Glass overhang

Roof plan with the drain pipe which made out of glass so people see the ater coming down when it is raining.

Trying different shape of fire stair to resolve the space and escape route problem.

Experimenting differnt shapes of the gallery, also trying to avoid a shape corner by turning the whole shape. This also create a small gap between the gallery with the adjacent building that allows some pedestrian to peak the courtyard when they are walking pass this building.

Project 3 -Narrative & Concept

The concept is inspired by my own experience. I lost the chance to have my artwork from HSC to be presented in the gallery of NSW by five marks.

So this commercial gallery is for students whose works have the potential to be presented in a national gallery and also provide a space for them to develop their works more in a different perspective and with no more boundary or limitation.

The owner is based on my high school art teacher who helped me a lot through the year. So the owner will also have a high school art teacher background so she understand fully what art hsc is like and has the experience of helping students working on their body of work.

For her, art is her life and her life is art as well. So I want the space to be full in controlled in her hands and part of her; at the same time, she is an artwork herself in the gallery.
